About

Hello! I’m Aamir Virani (he/him), and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my wife and children.

I am originally from Houston, Texas, and am a proud Houstonian. I remain devoted to the city and love discussing how it’s not what you expect. I’m also a Rockets fan, even though I now live in their nemesis’s town.

Rice University

I studied electrical engineering at Rice University and Stanford University; I remain an Owl at heart.

Dropcam

After a stint in hardware engineering at National Instruments, I focused on software engineering and product management. I worked at a few startups and then co-founded Dropcam, which brought home video monitoring to the mainstream. Google Nest acquired the company, and the primary set of products was re-branded as Nest Cam and Google Aware.

I also worked as a venture capitalist at Felicis Ventures. After a year, though, I decided I didn’t belong on that side of the table. I continue to serve as an angel investor and advisor to people and organizations doing good things worldwide.

NGA

In 2021, I was a Presidential Innovation Fellow, which brings industry leaders into the federal government to help with strategic initiatives to keep America safe and secure. I worked with the National Geo-spatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) to bring software product management into its software development process. Acting as an “interim VP-Product” within the CTO’s office, I helped define the role in the existing context and set up an onboarding and training process for the folks exhibiting product management responsibilities and traits.

I now work on small software and data products while being a dad.
